Art Plus Gallery presents The Path Toward Light, an exhibition of lithographs by Bang Hai Ja (1937–2022), one of Korea’s pioneering abstract artists whose lifelong artistic practice was devoted to the exploration of light, life, and the inner world.

For Bang Hai Ja, light was more than a visual element. It was the source of life and a universal presence connecting the human being, nature, and the cosmos. Throughout her career, she sought to reveal this invisible light through color, form, texture, and material. 

Having moved to France in 1961, Bang developed an artistic language that brought together the sensibility of Korean tradition and the experimental possibilities of European modern art. Her practice extended across painting, printmaking, natural pigments, Hanji, fresco, and stained glass. Through these diverse media, she continuously explored how light could emerge from within matter and become an expression of inner experience. 

The lithographs presented in this exhibition offer a particularly intimate encounter with Bang Hai Ja’s world of light. Radiating circles, translucent layers, subtle colors, and rhythmic lines suggest the movement of light from an inner point toward the surrounding space. The images may evoke the birth of a star, the energy of a living cell, the reflection of sunlight on water, or simply a moment of quiet illumination.

Yet these forms are not intended as literal representations of nature. Rather, they embody the artist’s contemplation of the invisible essence of life. Bang once described her artistic vision through the relationship between light, life, love, and peace, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all existence. 

The Path Toward Light invites viewers to follow this movement from darkness toward illumination—from the visible surface of the artwork toward an inward experience of light.
