Artist’s Statement
My photography begins with a journey into places that are difficult to reach—remote landscapes, unfamiliar villages, and regions where people live far from the rhythms of the modern world. I am drawn to the deep inland areas where strangers do not easily set foot, not simply because of their geographical remoteness, but because these places allow me to encounter people and landscapes in their most unembellished forms.
During my travels, I have witnessed both the extraordinary beauty of nature and the difficult realities of everyday life. In the desolate 6,000-meter Pamir, where snow falls even in summer, I encountered young girls sitting quietly beside rugged mountains, waiting for the occasional traveler to purchase their horse-milk cheese. Along the dark red Amazon River, I saw people rushing toward ferries, carrying small carved boats and bags of inexpensive food in the hope of making a living. These encounters remained with me long after I had left. Their determination, vulnerability, and dignity reminded me of the fundamental desire to live, connect, and continue moving forward.
For me, photography is a way of preserving these moments of encounter. I do not approach the places I photograph simply as exotic landscapes or distant cultures. Instead, I try to remain present, to observe quietly, and to allow the atmosphere of a place and the people I meet to reveal themselves naturally. Sometimes loneliness becomes part of the landscape; at other times, a small gesture, a face, or a fleeting moment of laughter transforms an unfamiliar place into something deeply intimate.
My travels are ultimately journeys toward comfort and peace. Walking through unfamiliar environments with my own two feet allows me to slow down and encounter the world directly. Through the camera, I try to capture not only what I see, but also what I feel—the silence of a vast landscape, the warmth of an unexpected encounter, the traces of hardship, and the quiet beauty that exists within ordinary life.
I do not seek to follow the aesthetic or philosophy of any famous photographer. Instead, I trust my own experience and intuition. What I pour into my photography is the beauty that my best self has chosen to see.
Photography, for me, is therefore both a record of travel and a way of understanding life. Each image is a fragment of a journey, carrying memories of people, landscapes, solitude, and human warmth. Through these images, I hope to share a sense of quiet consolation and to remind myself—and perhaps the viewer—that even in the most remote and lonely places, there is always a reason to continue searching for beauty, connection, and the possibility of laughter.
Biography
Sang Woo Yun is a photographer based in Seoul, Korea. He holds a BFA from Hanyang University in Seoul.
Yun’s photographic practice is deeply rooted in travel and direct encounters with people and landscapes in remote parts of the world. He is particularly drawn to places that remain relatively untouched by contemporary urban life—remote mountains, inland villages, riversides, and communities living far from familiar centers of culture and commerce.
Through his travels, Yun documents landscapes alongside the everyday lives of the people he encounters. His photographs often emerge from moments of quiet observation: people waiting, working, traveling, or simply existing within vast and sometimes harsh natural environments. Rather than approaching these places as exotic subjects, he seeks to capture their atmosphere and the human emotions that he experiences there.
His photographic practice reflects a personal search for beauty, comfort, and peace. The landscapes he encounters are not merely geographical locations but become emotional spaces in which solitude, hardship, human warmth, and hope coexist.
Yun does not intentionally follow the aesthetic or philosophy of established photographers. Instead, he relies on his own experiences and intuition, photographing what he considers to be authentic and meaningful. His work transforms personal journeys into visual records of human resilience, nature, and the quiet beauty found in unfamiliar places.
