Artist’s Statement

My work begins with the ordinary moments of everyday life—the people we encounter, the places we pass through, and the quiet emotions that often remain unspoken. I am interested in how seemingly simple scenes can hold personal memories, relationships, and stories, and how these fragments of everyday experience become meaningful through time.

People are at the center of my practice. Through gestures, expressions, and relationships between figures, I explore emotions such as affection, empathy, companionship, solitude, and remembrance. Rather than depicting a specific narrative, I leave space for each scene to suggest a story, allowing viewers to connect the image with their own memories and experiences.

Materiality is an important part of this process. I combine clay, modeling paste, modeling gel, Korean hanji paper, and acrylic paint to build surfaces that extend subtly beyond the two-dimensional picture plane. The layered and tactile surface creates a sense of depth while preserving the intimacy of a painting. The physical traces of the materials become part of the story, giving form to emotions that cannot always be expressed through words.

My recent works continue to look at human relationships and shared experiences through scenes of companionship, travel, nature, and everyday encounters. I am drawn to the moments in which people recognize one another, share a quiet connection, or simply exist together. These ordinary moments become a way of reflecting on what it means to remember, to empathize, and to live alongside others.

Ultimately, my work is an invitation to pause and look closely at the familiar. Through people, places, and fragments of everyday life, I seek to create images in which personal memory and collective emotion can meet.
