Sympathy EMPATHY, a special art exhibition of the 8th Seoul Africa Festival 2025, will be held in the grass room on the 4th floor of the DDP Design Lab from September 12 to 13. 

The exhibition, which explores the theme of "Playing Together and Empathy created by Africa" by combining various cultures and artistic senses, will be joined by Kwon Soon-cheol, Han Hong-soo, Kim Myung-hee, Oh Man-cheol, Lee So, and Won Won-ho, the leading artists of Korean contemporary art. In addition, photographer Mayowa Lawal from Nigeria will participate to provide a new aesthetic experience that blends Korean and African cultures. 

The exhibition is expected to provide an opportunity for visitors to share different cultures and gazes through delicate and special works and experience the value of "empathy" in art. 

Esther Kim, the curator of the exhibition, explained, "Empathy EMPATHY contains the process of artists with different cultural backgrounds and senses creating a new EMPATHY through the common language of PLAY."

In addition, he added, "This exhibition will be a place of active sympathy created by the exchange of African and Korean art, beyond simply appreciating the work."

제8회 서울 아프리카 페스티벌 2025의 특별 기획 미술 전시 ‘공감 EMPATHY’이 오는 9월 12일부터 13일까지 DDP 디자인랩 4층 잔디사랑방에서 펼쳐진다. 

다양한 문화와 예술적 감각이 어우러져 ‘함께하는 놀이와 아프리카가 만들어내는 공감’이라는 주제를 탐구하는 이번 전시에는 한국 현대미술의 대표 작가인 권순철, 한홍수, 김명희, 오만철, 이소, 원상호가 함께한다. 또한, 나이지리아 출신의 사진작가 Mayowa Lawal이 참여해 한국과 아프리카 문화가 어우러지는 새로운 미학적 경험을 선사한다. 

이번 전시는 섬세하고 특별한 작품을 통해 서로 다른 문화와 시선을 공유하고, 관람객들이 예술 속에서 ‘공감’이라는 가치를 새롭게 체험할 수 있는 기회를 제공할 것으로 기대를 모은다. 

이번 전시에서 큐레이터를 맡은 에스더 김은 “‘공감 EMPATHY’는 서로 다른 문화적 배경과 감각을 가진 예술가들이 ‘놀이(PLAY)’라는 공통 언어를 통해 새로운 ‘공감(EMPATHY)’을 만들어가는 과정을 담아낸다”고 설명했다.

아울러 “이번 전시는 단순히 작품을 감상하는 자리를 넘어, 아프리카와 한국 예술의 교류가 만들어내는 활발한 공감의 장이 될 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
